Kitesurfing Kite Equipment for Beginners
If you are new to the sport of power kiting, there are a number of equipment options out there for you. If you’ve never flown a power kite, it’s a good idea to start with a two line foil kite. These are geared for recreational kite flyers, and will help you hone your flying skills before you’re ready to move on to four line traction kites. You can use a two line foil kite in any large opening; usually you can find a good spot to fly in your local park.
When starting out, don’t be wowed by power kites with larger wings. These generate huge amounts of power and are more difficult to control. Larger power kites are really only recommended for intermediate and expert power kiters. A kitesurfing kite with wings of 2 to 3 meters is a good size for beginners. They’ll fly in a large range of winds and won’t overpower you and sweep you away.
There is no need to get rid of your smaller kitesurfing kite as you become more experienced and skilled. A smaller kite is always great to have in your arsenal, as smaller power kites are necessary for days with higher winds. A grass surface generally requires more kite size, and subsequent power, than when you are power kiting on the beach. As you become more experienced, you can invest in a larger kite to provide you with more power and torque for days with light winds. Once you get your feet wet, you’ll find yourself buying a number of power kite makes and models so you can enjoy this great sport in any surface or win condition. A small, medium, and large kite will probably be all you need until you really ready to take your power kiting to the next level.
